Leon Sturm: The New Prince of German Poker?

Young German poker player Leon Sturm has recently made a splash in the high roller tournament circuit, winning two million-dollar prizes in just a week. The 22-year-old first won $1,518,400 in an online Super Millions tournament, followed by $1,546,024 in Event #23: $50,000 High Roller at the 2023 WSOP. His success has drawn comparisons to another German prodigy, Fedor Holz.

Following in Fedor Holz’s Footsteps?

At age 21, Fedor Holz won $1.3 million in the 2014 WCOOP Main Event, catapulting him to fame. Like Sturm, Holz made a name for himself online before crushing it live. In 2015, he took 3rd place in the $10,000 Championship for $268,463 and 25th place in the Main Event for $262,574. The next year, Holz won his first bracelet by taking down the $111,111 High Roller for One Drop for $5 million. To date, Holz has won $38.8 million in tournament earnings and two bracelets.

Sturm currently has $2.1 million in live tournament earnings. If he wants to catch up to his predecessor, the “wunderkind” Holz, who has two bracelets and $38.8 million in earnings, he has his work cut out for him. While Holz has yet to appear at the 2023 WSOP, he is likely to play in some of the higher buy-in events. In last year’s Event #83: $50,000 High Roller, he finished 7th for $203,107, and in the 2021 Event #5: $100,000 High Roller, he finished 10th for $167,869.

Sturm has also had some impressive live results. His biggest live cash before this week came from taking 4th place in the $5,000 Main Event at the 2022 World Poker Tour (WPT) Venetian for $327,000. Additionally, he finished 6th in the $25,500 High Roller at the 2023 Lucky Hearts Poker Open for $83,100.

Conclusion

The gambling industry is a high-risk, high-reward business, and success requires constant effort and practice. This article introduced German poker player Leon Sturm and his predecessor Fedor Holz, and explored the possibility of Sturm following in Holz’s footsteps. We should recognize that success is not accidental, but requires long-term effort and relentless pursuit. In gambling or any other field, we should maintain humility and practice, constantly learning and improving our skills, to stand out in fierce competition.
