Elpayaa Leads After Day 1A of Main Event

Day 1A of the Main Event drew 134 entries and ended up needing overtime as the scheduled 17 levels were not enough to get into the money.

Extended hand for hand play was needed, well into Level 18 before the money bubble of 21 was reached when Leo Tarasov was taken out on the river by Joseph Elpayaa who bagged the chip lead for his effort with 687,000.

The short stacks were happy to hear of Tarasov’s bad luck as they made Day 2 and the money by the slimmest of margins. Particularly Abby Merk who bagged just a handful of big blinds with 31,000 as she successfully survived for a while as the bubble short stack.

At the other end of the leaderboard, Angelo Kozonis (pictured) finished just behind Elpayaa with 605,000 as the only only player to be within 250,000 of the chip leader.

15-time ring winner Josh Reichard was third in chips to end the night after a solid final few levels.

The 21 players will now advance to Day 2 which is Sunday at noon where they will join those who make it through Day 1B and Day 1C over the next two days.
